We've compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions to fully cover the musculoskeletal topic:

What is a musculoskeletal disorder?

Quite simply, a musculoskeletal disorder is an injury to the musculoskeletal system that affects a person’s movement. Typically, these injuries happen by gradual wear-and-tear to the joints, ligaments, and muscles, sudden damage caused by extensive activities, or a sudden, sharp movement. A musculoskeletal disorder is commonly referred to as “repetitive motion injury”, “repetitive stress injury”, and “overuse injury”.

What are the most common musculoskeletal disorders?

While there are numerous musculoskeletal disorders, the most common disorders you may be aware of are the following:

·      Carpal Tunnel

·      Tendonitis

·      Muscle/Tendon sprain

·      Ligament sprain

·      Rotator Cuff Tendonitis

·      Herniated Disc

·      Trigger Finger

What heightens someone’s risk of developing a musculoskeletal disorder?

If someone is continuously exposed to a stressful environment filled with MSD risk factors, their body will begin to feel fatigued. This wear-and-tear on the body suddenly opens your body up to risk of developing a musculoskeletal disorder. For example, the NBA players practice at the highest competitive level for basketball which requires an extensive amount of repetition, body exertion, and sharp movements so they are at an increased risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders.

Risk factors are typically broken up into two categories: ergonomics risk factors and individual risk factors. So, what is the difference?

Ergonomic risk factors

Over an extended period of time force, repetition, and posture can lead to MSD.

Individual risk factors

Over an extended period of time poor work practices, poor fitness, and poor health habits can lead to MSD.

How does musculoskeletal disorders affect NBA players?

It’s no secret that the NBA requires extreme dedication both physically and mentally. The Golden State Warriors, our hometown team, are at an increased risk of muscle sprains, ligament sprains, and more due to their rigorous, habitual schedules.
